Dreams can come true!

When we first started our business we gave ourselves a number of aims. One was to have a training arm to our business, another was to have the front cover and a profile piece in our regional glossy magazine. Well we've been training for a couple of years now and it was a pleasure today to see the cover image of Claire Marr on display in local shops, on news stands and on the actual magazine. Thanks too to Hannah, Cally and Tanya who also feature. So moral of the story, however long things take, stick at them and eventually it will be yours, oh yes, it will!

Feedback from Jersey

Thanks to Paul Watson of Paul Watson Photography in St Helier for sending this feedback from the weekends adventures in Jersey.

I’ve just attended the workshops with John Denton and can’t speak highly enough about the two days; they were fantastic. John shared his knowledge freely and made the workshops fun, and educational; I learnt so much on the two days. It is not often you meet someone who is at the top of their game and who is willing to share their knowledge with others.

John made me feel welcomed and supported; right down to the introductory e-mail I received before the event, John answered a few of my questions about the workshop before I arrived. On the two days john gave me confidence to get involved, to make mistakes and then to correct them with his instruction. I wasn’t made to feel that I could not ask a ‘daft question’.

With John for the weekend was Colin Jones, a great guy who offered his time to support the attendees for the weekend and to make sure things ran smoothly. He sourced a wedding dress for the model when the one ordered did not turn up.

The model for the weekend was Claire Marr, who was an ultimate professional. Claire had to endure not just the Jersey weather (more about that later) but also me a newbie in directing models. Claire approached her work with enthusiasm and a sense of fun; she was happy to try different poses and when it was clear I was struggling with explaining what I wanted she went with it and produced the look I was after. I’ve now got some great images for my portfolio all thanks to Claire’s personality and patience in working with and for me.

The Jersey weather wasn’t too kind to us on the Saturday for the shooting brides workshop, you could say there was a bit of precipitation; despite this, John provided a session that was full of tips, tricks and instruction to make a wet wedding a pictorial success. Using Elinchrom Ranger Quadra Flashes John instructed the group on how to use them to maximize creativity and produce great art images. John utilized the internal environment by setting up opportunities to use stairwells; lifts, a lovely red wall and some hotel lamps to create images inside. If this had been a real wedding the techniques and setups John showed us would really save the day.

Claire our model did get the chance to show the dress off to its full with her fantastic figure, great smile and warm personality. When we did venture outside in the cold and drizzle, Claire just got on with it, producing poses, gestures and stunning facial expressions on command without complaint.

The Sunday saw much better weather for the ‘funky portraits’ workshop. We were able to recreate images replicating Hollywood glamour right through to high-end fashion shots. Claire had an extensive wardrobe and mixed and matched it to create a look to go with the concept presented to her.

John presented a thoughtful workshop, which encompassed the whole portrait session, from working with clients and models through the sales opportunities, the do’s and don’t and onto how to create the image using lights, props and flash. John helped us to design our own shoot and gave instruction when necessary, all of this, both from John and Claire was done with good humor and a professional attitude.

I joined the society to take advantage of the special offer of the two training days and membership and I’m so pleased I did.  I’d highly recommend attending a workshop with John and Claire.

Thanks Paul, loved your company and the images you took and looking forward to seeing you again soon.

Big upload but what a fantastic weekend just experienced. We were on the beautiful island of Jersey with The Societies. Huge thanks to Colin Jones for making it all happen and keeping us on track and to Claire Marr for being a superb model. If you want us to come to your area then don't hesitate to get in touch and we'll arrange a workshop.
