It's been an amazing week, culminating in me being awarded a Master of Photography Award for my work with the Societies. I was so proud to walk out on stage and accept the award from Juliet and Phil Jones who in my opinion have done more to raise standards of photography in this country than any other living person.

It was also great to work with Zak, Vivienne and Hannah during the week. Thanks too to all the commercial partners that had my work on their stands, not least Bev Bennett and the Colorworld Crew.

Wonderful thanks to the Flash Centre mob too and I look forward to working with you at Focus on Imaging in March along with the Societies and OnOne Software.

So much happened, so much to look forward to. Right now though I'm off to polish a beautiful crystal trophy.

Societies Convention Next Week

It's almost time for the Societies Convention 2012.

I've been fortunate to have been invited to talk at the last two events and this one promises to be best yet.

I'm so excited about my own involvement at the event and to meet loads of friends, old, new and waiting to be made.

It's an incredible atmosphere at the venue. It starts on Tuesday for me, travel down, arrive leisurely at the hotel then get thrown into a frantic round of emptying wagons and setting up with all the staff from Rhyl!

Wednesday will see me having a lie in before setting out in the afternoon for a trip around London with a group of photographers and the wonderful Vivienne Edge. This one is SOLD OUT I'm afraid but there are more talks later in the week.

On Thursday it will be my birthday and to celebrate I'm helping Robert Lino with his portrait workshop.

Friday is when it all starts getting busy. In the morning I have a Confidential Workshop with Vivienne. If you want to know more about the art of nude, boudoir and lingerie photography then this practical session is one for you.

In the afternoon Camilla and I will be on stage at the Flash Centre stand in the Trade Show. We'll be exploring a few different uses for softboxes and the Elinchrom Quadras. We'll be repeating this show on the Saturday and Sunday so no excuse for not coming along.

Saturday is a welcome all comers Masterclass on shooting a Model Portfolio. If you come along you'll find out what it takes to add this lucrative aspect to your business and what images you need to take to benefit your clients.

Sunday is the culmination of our week and a session I can't wait to deliver. It Takes Two is a concept we've been developing for the past twelve months. Our previous principal model is on the verge of retiring and has been replaced on this session by Hannah Jones. Hannah has huge experience across the stills and film industry and together we will tell you everything you've ever wanted to know about shooting with models. It's going to be the most informative session of the whole convention so any questions you want to ask......come along and share.

You will also see me on the stands of all my friends at the Trade Show, Colorworld, Sim2000, Exclusive7, OnOne, Nik and Aaduki.

Kat at the Studio (NSFW)

The wind was howling, temperatures freezing but Kat made it through to the studio and we had a great shoot. This was only her second shoot and yet she shows such a great degree of body awareness and posing ability that we have no problem adding her to our register. She'll be on some of the workshops later in the year so come and meet her.Here are a few from the day. It's not just the printed book that's come out recently.

We've also launched a range of books that will be available through our Amazon store.

Using Kindle as the main platform you can subscribe to have the blog downloaded to your mobile device every time it's updated.

We are also producing a range of ebooks to download to your Kindle or other mobile device be it iPhone, iPad or Android.

These are starting with books that go through individual shoots and describe in detail the lighting, posing, styling techniques that were used to create the images. There will be links to the full shoot and a wealth of inspiration and information.

Whether you want to read them at your leisure or keep them on your phone to review during a shoot we intend this library will become a vital part of the photographers tool kit.

The first few will be fashion and nude shoots with real life weddings coming soon. Keep an eye on the store as content will be added to regularly.

2011, a few highlights and weird fact

So that was 2011 and now onto 2012. Out with the old and in with the new is our rallying call for the next twelve months and you'll see a lot of changes to what we do and how we go out about it. This is a slideshow of some of my favourite bits of the last twelve months and includes some of the faces you'll become increasingly familiar with in the next year.

Fran at the Studio

Fran made the long trip over from Whitehaven yesterday for a shoot. She's done a couple of shoots with my Cumbrian friends at Brookes Callow Photography and the experience stood her in good stead.

We wanted to showcase her tattoos and the light was great even if temperatures never rose above zero all day.

Thanks Fran for keeping going and enduring the cold.

Studio Development

Great to work with Julie Fraser (http://julie-fraser.co.uk/) over the last two days. It's been an intense session of looking at Boudoir photography and the shape of her business.

It's all been part of our Studio Development Programme. A truly bespoke year long programme that takes new or developing photographers or those who want to reinvigorate their business, and puts together a training package to get them to their next levels. It's a complete examination of both photographic skills and business management. If you think it could be part of your 2012 training then give us a call for more detail.

One to One Day in Beaconsfield

A Few Days on the Road

Fantastic day with Ned and the team from Fera Photography yesterday at her Wiltshire studio, not least our superb MUA Vicky.

It was a freezing cold day combined with rain and wind for extra zip! Great bunch of photographers though and Camilla worked her magic to produce a great range of poses.

We've had another full day today, last day of the tour tomorrow then back up to deepest Yorkshire before the snow arrives. There will be a bigger blog post then with a few more explanations behind some of the images and the lighting used.

Art Nudes in Hatfield

Thanks to Lee and his team at SIM2000 in Hatfield for all their assistance in putting on todays workshop.

We had a fab time with a great team of photographers and of course the amazing Camilla.

Used a mix of ambient light, tungsten light and flash to create the images and gained inspiration from the industrial settings all around us.

Back to the UK and freezing today at the Nudes on the Farm workshop.

Camilla was amazing and worked sooo hard to get the images we wanted. Thanks to the full house of students, you were equally hardy albeit with more layers on!

Great day with a great group of people. Time to catch up in next few days before Camilla and I go on the road on Friday for a week. One place left in Hatfield, Hertfordshire for a Nudes Workshop if you fancy it, otherwise all other dates are full now to the end of the year.

Next big event is the SWPP Convention 2012 so hope to see you there.

Cyprus Workshop

After the intensity of Istanbul our workshop in Cyprus was a much more relaxed affair. The heat was more than welcome and great to meet old friends from my previous visit. The day was a mix of fashion and bridal shooting and great to be able to finish up with a fabulous sunset on the beach.

Istanbul

Our trip to Istanbul provided so many memorable firsts.

First visit to Turkey, first visit to Istanbul, first visit to a Sultans Palace, first visit to a Bazaar, first vist to a Mosque and first vegetarian meal that I've actually enjoyed!

It was an overwhelming assault on our senses at times with so many sights, smells and flavours to be savoured. Sitting in the Sultan Ahmed square drinking Turkish coffee whilst the call to prayer billowed around is a timeless experience that was just wonderful to experience. Huge thanks to Paul and all at The Societies for arranging the trip and to Kayhan our fantastic local contact who did so much for all of us, was great fun to be around and I am delighted to be able to call my friend. Thanks to must go to Mehmet who guided us around the Grand Bazaar, leading us to fantastic shops and photographic vantage points.

We are planning to take a small group of photographers back to the country in 2012 for a similar guided tour and photographic experience using UK and local models to shoot with in fantastic locations. After a fantastic weekend of workshops it was great to shoot one on one with Hannah.

We'd invited Hannah to the studio for a test shoot and she proved herself a talented and beautiful model who will be working with us many more times in the coming months. We explored a wide range of looks, starting at 0530 on the beach and going through to late evening and our imagining of an ice queen look. We were helped by Bex Longthorp who created amazing looks with her makeup.

OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 6

Every so often something comes along that changes the way I view my workflow or photography. Lightroom did it, the Elinchrom Quadra Rangers did it and now along comes the OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 6.

Now before we go any further I will state something of an allegiance in that I am an official friend of OnOne. That means I am a recognised advocate of their products. However I see my role as that of a highly critical friend and if I thought their product was cak would tell them in no uncertain terms.

So when I first got wind that a new version of the software suite was coming out I was nervous and excited in equal measure. Would it be a revolution or a big disappointment.

Well after the first sneak preview I had a few weeks ago I was excited and now having played with the final release for a few days I can safely say it's fab.

Firstly let me say it's a complete and standalone suite of applications. You don't need to piggyback it on Photoshop. The main body of the suite is Perfect Portrait, Perfect Layers 2, Perfect Effects 3 and Perfect Mask 5. Add in Perfect Resize 7, Focal Point 2 and Photoframe 4 and you've got incredibly powerful tools at your disposal.

The headline grabber for me is Perfect Portrait which allows instant tidying of skin without the plastic look that is a feature of other similar programmes. The retouch brush here is superb for getting rid of spots, lines and stray hairs. Because it's a layer based application you can reduce lines without totally removing them. You can also use blending modes and take out spots in lighten or darken mode for fantastic results.

The previews of your image in Effects are fantastic and allow you to see exactly the changes you are making. You can vary the strength, mask it to particular areas of the image, change blending mode, combine multiple effects.... I've only had it for a couple of days like I say but the possibilities appear endless.

The main advantage I see to workflow is that I can perform all my Raw adjustments in Lightroom, take them into Perfect Suite 6 for a little additional gloss and then export. Photoshop is redundant and Perfect Photo Suite is a fraction of the price.

I'm going to be putting some webinars together soon but watch the blog for some before and afters using the Suite and more thoughts on workflow etc.

Well the weather has been horrendous over here in Cumbria today. Rain, mist and low light were not what we ordered after the heat of the last few days.

Camilla however was a fantastic model and worked so hard to give the students the looks and shape they required to get some great images.

A Few Thoughts on Training

I despair sometimes.

Having worked in the professional photography sphere for almost a decade now I see so many people coming into the industry and not receiving the guidance and advice they need to create strong images and drive our whole profession forward.

Worse I see many spending money on training courses that do nothing to actually improve their skill base.

It's sad but true that many people who cannot make it as a photographer themselves see training as a next viable option.

That's why it's important for me to keep it real and work with clients on wedding commissions, portrait shoots and portfolios. That keeps me fresh and more importantly ensure that my views on training come from a pracitcal perspective. By doing so it also enables me to keep an eye on new talent coming into the business.

This was the case a year or so ago when Tanya first came to the studio. We recognised her ability and pushed her in the right direction. Since then she has rocketed in the fashion world, most recently shooting in Japan. Fortunately she is now back in the country and working with us again.

Working with quality models allows me to concentrate on teaching the skills of lighting, direction and pose required to produce great pics whilst at times letting the model loose to demonstrate their skills in posing, emoting and understanding their own bodies.

So it's wonderful that Tanya is now back and will feature in many of our future workshops. If you'd like her on board at your One to One or group fashion session then feel free to say when booking. She joins Fredau and Camilla as our principal models, all of whom offer their own elegance and value to our sessions.

Fredau and I will be touring next week with the Societies and then going over to Ireland for some Boudoir and Nude workshops. Then it's up to Cumbria for another Nudes Workshop this time with Camilla. If you want to join us at any of the events or arrange your own then call the studio for details.

More than anything if you're a photographer or model invest in your future. Only go on a workshop after thoroughly researching what it will give you and knowing that every penny spent will bring you a return and bring you a step closer to being the best you can be.

Thurso Part 2

Well we finally left Thurso after a splendid day shooting on the streets with Julie Fraser and finishing off with a talk to the local Photographic Society and the opportunity to critique some of their work. A lovely time with lovely people and I hope to revisit before too long.

It was a pleasure to drive back south in daylight and actually see some of the countryside we were travelling through this time, although the rain did it's best to mask off the views.

It was then time for a very pleasant two days spent in the company of Caroline Trotter and her family as well as a great group of photographers for a vintage boudoir and fashion shoot.

Thanks to Fredau for being so patient and wonderful with us all and putting up with all my crap jokes! Hope the pictures justified the effort.

Bit of a theme developing in many recent posts. Firstly we have more images of the wonderful Camilla Helley who modelled on our Art of Nudes Workshop yesterday. Secondly when I work with her it rains. It's a fact, every single time we get the camera out and aim at Camilla it throws down. Managed to find a couple of sunny moments in between though yesterday but boy was it cold. Thanks to everyone who came along and made it rock.

Down in London Town

Just got back from a trip down to London for a little teaching session. We spent a day runing around the city itself and the second day in the Boutique Malmaison Hotel for a Boudoir workshop. I was joined by Camilla who just gets better and better with every shoot and was a pleasure to work with.

Devon and Nicola

Didn't even pick up a camera yesterday as I assumed the role of instructor/mentor/light wrangler/tea boy! Loved it too.

Devon came back to the studio after her first shoot the other week and Nicola took these pictures. Love it when a student gets it and Nicola really is developing a good eye and technical understanding.

Building on the previous day we took elements of Lifestyle, Glamour, Fashion and Nude Photography to put together the shoot. Devon was a star throughout and here are some of Nicola's images.

Maternity Shooting

It's been a hectic couple of days. Back from holiday and straight into teaching session with one of our Studio Development students. Nicola has only recently turned to photography and is busy putting together her portfolio and business. What a start she's making though and these pics prove it. Good to work with Rebecca again who I hadn't seen since SWPP Convention in London last January. With just two weeks to go before her due date she was the perfect maternity model.

27th August - Nude Workshop at Studio

If you're serious about photographing people then you need to do a nude shoot at some stage in your life. Better still do it with a good model and a good instructor who can talk you through the ideas of pose and light that will then flatter your subjects whether they are naked or wearing a wedding dress.

Anyone who has been on any of my workshops will know this is almost a mantra that I chant. Why, because I strongly believe it. When you can pose someone and light them when there are no props, nothing to hide behind, just the human form and light to work with, you will become a better photographer.

That's why I'm delighted to be putting on another art nude workshop with the fantastic model Camilla-Rose. It will be at our studio on 27th August. Here are the details

Join John and his newest model Camilla Helley on a workshop that will give you the biggest boost ever in your ability to pose and direct people.

You will learn how to use light to shape and define the human form. This knowledge is essential whether you are a nude photographer, fashion photographer or wedding photographer.
John will demonstrate how he uses light in his nude shoots whether it’s ambient light, speedlights or the Elinchrom Quadra’s. He will show you exactly how he poses people regardless of their size to get the best from their body shape.

You will get the opportunity to select your own location and lighting to work one to one with Camilla. John will then talk you through the post production techniques he employs to finalise his art nude imagery.

The event will take place at John’s studio, based on a farm so offering many options for indoor and outdoor photography.

Portfolio Shoots

It's Devon's Birthday and to celebrate she came to the studio for a portfolio shoot.

She wants to get into the world of art nude modelling and needed some images to kick start her portfolio. I was delighted to help. So often we see young models not achieving their potential as they get poor pictures in their portfolios that don't do them justice. Any model starting their career needs to invest in their future by booking a shoot with a good photographer that will get them strong images. They will probably have to pay for that session as a good photographer will not give their time and expertise for nothing. Once they have a strong portfolio established the model may be able to go back to the same photographer and agree a time for images shoot.

Anybody who wants a shoot and honest assessment of their potential can come to the studio. My rates are reasonable and you will get some great images and advice.

Cherrie first shot with us about three years ago. Since then she has become the life model of choice for many artists in the East Riding. Visit the Ferens Gallery in Hull and you are likely to encounter her image in paint, stone, clay or any other medium you care to name.

Today, however, she teamed up with Liz to shoot some nude images around the studio in the photography style.

New Training Dates

When we first started in this business of photography we wanted training to be a part of what we do. Both Liz and I have been trained as trainers in our previous occupations and wanted to include this in our new venture. It's taken a time until we had a worthwhile message to talk about but now it's great that you guys and gals just can't get enough.

One caveat on this though. We keep it real. I still shoot weddings, fashion portfolios, boudoir and lifestyle shoots. I defy anybody to train these meaningfully unless they are currently involved in the genre. It's a personal thing but I strongly believe that trends change and unless you are active in the market place you're no good just teaching it. I keep teaching as one third of my business with active shooting taking up the remainder.

Likewise locations. I don't tend to use fantastic castles, manor houses etc for my workshops. I don't shoot all my weddings, fashion, nudes in those locations so won't make it too easy by just putting someone in an amazing place. I teach for reality. That means making use of the most uninspiring locations at times, making use of any light available to you.

I keep numbers low so that delegates can take their own pictures and better still........know how to take that picture tomorrow.

I use and pay professional models to be with me on the day. Not so that you just get a fantastic picture, I'll make you work hard for any image you create, but because I charge a good deal and wouldn't just use a past client or person off the street. I use pros so that I know that when I want to demonstrate a particular point I can do so and they understand exactly where I come from.

I use equipment that is within the pocket of the high end amateur, aspiring professional and working pro. I won't recommend anything I do not use or believe in. However we will make a range of suppliers available that we do believe in as they give top notch service and product.

If you want great pictures on your workshop, but also to actually learn something and be able to do the same tomorrow then come on down.

Liz has worked in business evaluation for many years in Essex and now brought that knowledge to bear in the photographic industry. Any business advice she gives you will not be flowered by bullshit and inspiration. It will work.

Camilla Helley is a total star, let me bow in nobodies way in my admiration for this girl. When the skies decided to empty themselves, her reaction was to step into the deluge.

It was lovely to welcome Olivia to the studio again yesterday. She's previously had a shoot for us in thick snow so it was great to have a summer shoot. Unfortunately the summer weather wasn't there to play and the rain came down in buckets.

What a scorcher and what a fantastic day.

A huge thank you to our models who worked so hard in the heat. Particularly Sarah and Laura with their fire act and gymnastics respectively. Bebe was her usual gorgeous self and Alexandra knocked everyone out from beginning to end of the day.

Thanks to Heather, Lynnda, Roger and Luke for all their work helping organise things and of course to Russ from The Flash Centre and Nik from Aaduki for joining us on the day.

Unofrtunately I only got to shoot during the demonstration phase of hte morning session so am as eager as anyone to see the pics from the afternoon. Here are a few of Alexandra plus the slideshow I put together in homage to the lighting kit that the day was all about.

When Liz met Lucy Part 2

Well Liz and Lucy hit it off so well the other day it was quite emotional so Lucy came back for a fuller shoot yesterday. I was relegated to the role of light monkey. Carrying flashes and reflectors and guiding Liz through the ways of the Elinchrom Quadras. Nice to sit back at times and instruct this way without a camera in my hand. Anyway they both played nicely and got some cracking pictures. Here are a few.

We will shortly be announcing some new training dates for those just starting out in photography and those well advanced. Some of those dates will be nude workshops as there is no better way to understand lighting and posing the human body than to take part in one of these events.

Going one to one with Cally

Well not strictly, but the reigning Miss Hull Cally Beech was kind enough to join us at the studio yesterday for a one to one training session with Rupa and Darin of Photography by Rupa.

We spent a productive day around the studio and ventured out into the old town of Hull to capture some of the last shabby chic available before it all gets gentrified and cleaned up.

Good to have a little play with some new techniques with flashes and looking forward to demonstrating them on 31st July at our Quads Workout. Better news is that Cally will be joining us too and therefore guarantees you some beautiful images.

It's a training day on office procedures and post production today ahead of a trip to Southport tomorrow to the Jo Rutherford Studio for a group training workshop. All go but stops me getting bored!

Quadra Day

Join us at the studio on Sunday 31st July for an unforgettable day of lighting and shooting. Together with our friends from the Flash Centre we're putting an event together based around the power and flexibility of the Elinchrom Quadra Ranger lights.

These bits of kit have rocked my world since I first got my hands on them and I'm eager to share that excitement with you. If you own a set already and want to get more from them or are interested in buying or even if you never use flash and are scared witless of it then this is the day for you.

In the morning we will demonstrate to you just how you can work with these lights to get a range of different looks both indoors and on location.

In the afternoon you will be split into groups of no more than 10 and go off to shoot with a professional model in a range of styles. Each group will have a set of lights to play with and an experienced user to guide them through. You will get incredible images and have an incredible experience.

Aaduki Insurance, OnOne Software and Colorworld Imaging will also be on hand to offer advice on the business of photography and how you can make the fantastic images you take even better and sell them to your clients.

Starting at 0930 and finishing around 1700 it will be a full day of photography and practical information. Places are limited and available on a first come first served basis at £65 per head. This includes refreshments (your own packed lunch should be brought with you), model fees, licences to use images you take and all lighting kit will be provided.

Messing about by the River

Had fun at the weekend as we stayed in a house by the Thames and had the opportunity to work with a fabulous group of photographers, models and makeup artist. Lot of fun and the sun shone brightly on us which was a bonus!
